Every so often a boat comes along that breaks new ground and opens up new possibilities. The MC29 is such a boat.

Motorcat 29

In every marina these days there are power catamarans to be seen. With few exceptions, they have boxy, utilitarian lines. In this crowd the MC 29 stands out like a glamorous debutante at a ball. The styling is in the latest Italian manner, with sleek swooping lines proudly terminating in an aggressively pointed bow. Wait, only one bow, isn’t this a catamaran?

From above, she appears to be a stylish monohull, and even from ahead, the hull appears to float just clear of the water. On closer inspection, two narrow hulls grow out of the spray chines. From the bow, the shape is like a narrow trimaran, with the center hull just clear of the water.

There are some large wave piercing catamarans from New Zealand with similar style, but nothing in the below 10 meter range. How does this radical hull work? Remarkably well. Two modest outboards or a single Volvo D3 outdrive give effortless speeds in the mid 20 knot range. Fuel economy is outstanding using 5 GPH or less at 20 knots.

An amazingly smooth ride without pounding or slamming is delivered by the narrow and deep hulls combined with the full length center pod. Like most cats she leans outward in sharp turns, but this is less pronounced that in many others. In any case, sharp turns at high speed are for emergency maneuvers only, and are usually avoided in normal operation.

Accommodation is much like monohulls of similar length. The generous cockpit allows boarding through transom gates on either side. The main bulkhead may be open or optionally solid with a door for colder climates. On the same level as the cockpit is a 4 person dinette, full galley and comfortable helm station. The forward cabin has a private head and a large double berth. Generous storage areas are provided throughout.

The MC 29 is built in a modern factory in Poland, with a level of craftsmanship that complements her stylish lines. A range of comfort and navigational options allow an owner to equip her fishing or cruising, and legally trailerable size makes those far away destinations closer.

Designed by Jerry Kostanski with naval architecture and 3D computer from the Avia Design Group, the MC 29 breaks new ground in performance and style. It will be shown first at the 2006 Seatle , Southampton , Stockholm & Paris Boat Shows.

2013 Corsair Nationals

The 2013 Corsair Nationals were held in June on San Francisco Bay. Don teamed up with Gulf Coast Corsair Sprint owner and racer Bob Hodges and Elise Reade on a borrowed Corsair Dash. Seven races were held over three days in winds typically around 12-20 knots, making for some very exciting spinnaker legs (click here and here to view photos). The final race was a "tour of the bay" upwind past Alcatraz into the middle of the Golden Gate wind funnel where the fleet saw winds close to 30 knots, and then a spinnaker run back to the south bay. First place overall in the 20 boat fleet went to Florida sailor Phil Styne on a Sprint 750 Mk II, which was towed across the country from Stuart FL for the event. Don’s team on "Blue Bayou" came in second in class and second overall. Full results can be viewed by clicking on this link .
